Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant

On Friday April 1, 2011. Our Class was invited for lunch, at a newly opened Chinese seafood restaurant, Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant, in Burnaby, beside the Grand-Villa Casino and Delta hotel. Having said that, lunch at a Chinese Seafood Restaurant typically means that food served will be of the "Dim Sum" variety. The act of going to eat dim sum is called "Yum Cha" which translates to Drink Tea.

The first couple things noticed was that it has a smaller interior than your typical Chinese Seafood Restaurant, this might translate to better service and food quality as it would be a lot easier to handle the demand of the food. Also, each table cloth has Grand Dynasty's logo embroided in golden letters. Admittedly, this was the first time I've seen something like this on a table cloth.

Neatly folded napkins, double plate classy china setting welcomed us at the table. The difference? Most other seafood restaurant provide you with a basic white bowl, while the setting for this restaurant is intricate and detailed. Onwards to the food!!

Fried Daikon Radish. This restaurant's version of the dish is quite different in the sense that, aside from just frying the daikon radish, there were also little dried shrimp in it, giving it a hint of savoury goodness. It was very enjoyable!

Jellyfish. This jellyfish dish, was prepared a with a spicier kick to it, and it suits me just fine! The jellyfish was prepared perfectly, it wasn't hard chew on it at all and went down easy. Definitely have to try it
Marinated duck feet. This duck feet, like the jelly fish, was also wasn't overcooked, it was prepared flawlessly, there were no bones, and with a hint of spice, I could've eaten this all by myself.

Deep fried bean curd with salmon. Ok, this dish, was interesting. I wasn't the one doing the order, but when I took a bite into this one, I was expecting the normal shrimp, however, as I bit into it, the texture wasn't shrimp at all, but it was salmon fish! the fish wasn't overcooked, it was fresh, and the bean curd surrounding it was also marvellously deep fried. Bravo!
Shrimp dumpling, aka har gow. If you've been to dim sum places, you would know that, when you order this dish, it it impossible to get this out in one piece, and the pieces would be sticking to each other. However, at Grand Dynasty, I had no such problems, effortlessly, the shrimp dumpling was transported to my dish in one piece! The skin was moist, and the shrimp was juicy. There's really no need for me to describe it.

Steamed rice roll with deep fried fish paste. Having frequent dim sum places, I instantly thought, oh, there's "cha leung" which is steamed rice roll with chinese long donut, but where's the sauce? i took it anyways, and looked at it, only to realized it wasn't long donut inside. Being curious, I bit into it and realized its actually savoury, and fishy. I had to ask what it was and found out it was deep fried fish paste....need I say more?

Braised chicken feet. Another dim sum classic, the chicken feet was cooked perfectly, and there
wasn't much effort needed to get the bones off!

Steamed Egg Yolk Bun. This is one of my favourite dim sum dish. Sadly, it is also very hard to find in Vancouver. And when I saw this on the menu, I just had to get it! What is so special about this bun you ask? Check out the next picture!

When you bite into it, a lot of golden liquid just oozes out. That golden liquid would be egg yolk
with some custard feeling, it is a dessert bun. The yolk was still warm and flowy when we had it,
so it was freshly made! if you haven't had such a bun before, you will have to try it. I got greedy,
and had two of these to myself!
If I didn't tell you what this was, you would assume that this is the regular taro dumpling you would find everywhere. What if I told you this wasn't it, and if this was a dessert, would you believe me? What if I also told you, inside that deep fried shell, was the king of fruits, the durian, would that make your mouth watery? I appreciate the fact that Durian is not liked by some people, but coming from a tropical country, I had a lot of durian during my time, however, I never had it deep fried in a taro shell before. And let me tell you this, it was amazing! The durian is paste like inside the shell and the crunchy texture of the shell compliments the fresh durian paste!
On to the last little dish I have that afternoon. Mango Pudding. Now at this point, I was overwhelmed with so much surprises that, I don't think a simple Mango Pudding dessert can surprise me too much. WRONG! I have to admit, this is one of the best mango pudding dessert I've ever had. Reason being? look at the next picture.
What I found, as I make my first couple spoons was actual mango pieces in the pudding! without saying much, I went and finish my portion of it before most people. It was THAT good!

Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant provided my palate with a multitude of pleasant surprises. With a upscale feel and decor to it, it will make any food outing that much more special! I would definitely go back to this restaurant, and try some of the food that I didn't have this time around.
